A Clinical Review of 72 Cases of Inguinal Hernia


Abstract
During 2 years period, from February 1987 to January 1989, 72 patients with inguinal hernia were operated at department of Surgery of Gyeong Sang National University Hospital. They comprised. 64 men and 8 women with sex raio of 8: 1. Among them, those under 15 years of age were 60 cases (83.3%) and those above 60 years of age were 4 cases (5.6%).
The results of clinical analysis of these patients were summarized as follows:
1. Inguinal hernia was seen on the righe side in 46 cases (63.9%), on the left side in 19 cases (26.4%), and bilateral in 7 cases (9.7%).
2. 70 cases were indirect type (97.2%), 2 cases were direct type (2.8%) and there was , no combined type.
3. Chief complaint was predominantly inguinal swelling (90.1%) and scrotal swelling was the next (18.1%).
4. There were 9 cases that had contents within the hernia sac (12.5%) and the contents were omentum 4 cases (5.6%), ileum 4 cases (5.6%), and the ovary 1 case (1.4%).
5. Those with inguinal hernia showed hydrocele in 9 cases (12.5%), incaceration in 6 (8.3%), cryptorchism in 4 cases (5.6%).
6. 60 cases of inguinal hernias of patients under age of 15 years were repaired by high ligation (83.3%). Among patients above age of 15 years, 3 cases were repaired by Bassini type (4. 2%) and 9 cases were repaired by McVay type (12.5%). After 1988, the repair was none under local anesthesia for patients above age of 15 years.
7. The postoperative complications were 3 cases (4.2%) and there was no recurrence. The average follow up period was 6.2 months.
